Carburetors off
Jim and I went out to the car last night to take a closer look at the carbs. Jim tried to start it while I sprayed some carb cleaner in there and it backfired a few times but didn’t start. We decided to take them off, which didn’t end up being a huge ordeal – most of the nuts were loose anyway
Someone stripped most of the screws on the top but we were able to get to the float bowl and discover that it would come off. We decided to take it back to his place to take them off and look at ‘em but ended up going out drinking instead.
I put them on the table on my porch and started liberally spraying carb cleaner and trying to clean as much gunk off the outside as I could. I got the float bowls off and the gasoline that came out looked like whiskey and smelled sort of like old whiskey and gasoline. I should have saved it to market as a cologne. The float looks OK but I’m going to really start disassembling and cleaning it this weekend. I had a dream last night that it started (must have been the vapors from my clothes seeping into my brain).

The Zf’s are an non-adjustable nightmare. There is a guy in canada who sells a new set of HIF-6’s for the 164. The milage and idling are vastly improved. The ignition will be an issue unless the previous owner has properly oiled the distributer shaft, otherwise the engine will be a nightmare to start, and will have a floating idle.
I had one ( till my son wrecked it) that i rebuilt from stratch, had rallye gauges modified for the 6 cylinder, a custom walnut veneer dash, and too many other items to mention. I now have a second that i am restoring as well.
email me if you get stuck on any issue.
