Front carburetor

I finished cleaning the rear carburetor and am about 3/4 done with the front.  They both need gaskets, but it looks like the needle and jet are clean now and the float bowls look to be in good shape too.  The front carburetor had a ripped diaphragm (as you can see below) – pretty gnarly!  That probably had a little something to do with lack of vacuum in that carburetor.  Maybe when my ebay carbs get here I can take one off of those – unless the rebuild kits come with a diaphragm too?  I’m not sure if they do or not.  Also check out the before/after photos of the clean versus dirty..  That was before I started cleaning the front carb.  It’s crazy how much dirtier it was than the rear.

  • Don’t hate me because I’m retarded about cars and I live in a blue state. I own a 1971 Volvo 144 which I bought brand new in 1972. I have a big problem with my left stromberg carburetor. The silver cylinder plunger (in the hole in the carb in your picture) won’t move up and down. I sprayed wd-40 all over but it is still stuck in the down position. I even tried prying it up with a screw driver. Does this mean the choke is open or closed? Is there any way to unstick it? Thanks dude.

  • Hey man I emailed you. I’d get a carb rebuild kit and if you take the top off the carburetor with those 4 screws you can see the venturi diaphragm (like in the photo above mine was all torn to hell). Also if you pull out the whole valve (the silver tube with the needle at the bottom) you can clean that up with some carb cleaner. Just make sure to take all the rubber and plastic parts off before you do it and scrub it well with an old toothbrush.
